A 24-hour mental health support service has been introduced to aid individuals in the music industry. The Music Industry Therapy Collective has launched the Online Tour Health And Welfare Coaching service, catering to artists, production crew, promoters, venue staff, and others involved in the live music sector.
This initiative aims to address common mental health challenges faced by touring professionals, including depression, anxiety, stress, insomnia, burnout, addiction recovery, domestic conflicts, and loneliness. Sessions can be accessed globally at any time, offering confidential expert-led coaching sessions specifically tailored to the demands of tour life.
The service is not only focused on providing immediate support but also on promoting equality in mental health care access within the industry. Unused sessions are allocated to individuals touring at club and theatre levels, where resources are limited but the need for assistance is high.
Research by mental health charity Mind reveals that music industry workers are more susceptible to mental health issues compared to the general population, with musicians being particularly at risk of depression. Factors contributing to these challenges include financial pressures, isolation, demanding schedules, and substance abuse.
In a statement, the Music Industry Therapy Collective emphasized the unique stressors faced by touring professionals, such as long hours, performance pressure, and limited access to support. The collective’s philanthropic approach aims to bridge the gap in mental health care availability and support individuals at all levels of the music industry.
Industry experts have highlighted the intense and sometimes detrimental effects of touring on mental well-being. Tamsin Embleton of MITC emphasized the high-pressure nature of tour life, noting that many artists may not be adequately prepared for the realities of constant travel, erratic sleep patterns, and the party-centric culture that often accompanies live performances.
Various organizations offer mental health resources and support for music professionals, including MITC, TONIC Rider, Help Musicians UK, Music Support Org, and CALM. These resources provide assistance for individuals struggling with depression, addiction, or other mental health challenges, aiming to promote overall well-being within the music community.
The introduction of a dedicated mental health support service for touring music professionals reflects a growing awareness of the unique challenges faced by individuals in the music industry. By providing accessible and confidential coaching sessions, the initiative aims to prioritize the mental well-being of those working in the fast-paced and demanding world of live music.
