The New South Wales government has launched Australia’s largest cash music prize, the NSW Music Prize, aimed at celebrating the state’s exceptional contemporary musicians. With a total prize pool of $160,000, the initiative seeks to provide a career-boosting cash injection to deserving artists.
The NSW Music Prize comprises three award categories: the $80,000 NSW Music Prize for the artist or act with the most significant impact, the $40,000 NSW First Nations Music Prize for indigenous artists, and the $40,000 NSW Breakthrough Artist of the Year for emerging talents. The prizes are open to Australian citizens or permanent residents over 18 years old.
Minister for Music and the Night-time Economy, John Graham, emphasized the importance of supporting musicians and recognizing their cultural contribution, especially during challenging times. The initiative aims to encourage and empower artists to compete in the global music market.
A 20-member committee of music industry experts will nominate artists for the NSW Music Prize and Breakthrough Artist of the Year categories, while a separate panel of First Nations industry experts will handle nominations for the NSW First Nations Music Prize. The winners will be selected by expert judging panels.
The NSW Music Prize is part of the NSW Government’s 10-year Contemporary Music Strategy, designed to promote and support the music industry in the region. The winners of the prize will be announced at a ceremony in November 2025 during Ausmusic Month.
CEO of ARIA PPCA and Sound NSW advisory board member, Annabelle Herd, highlighted the rich history of launching successful artists from NSW onto the global stage. The targeted approach of the NSW Music Prize aims to continue this legacy by nurturing outstanding, export-ready music talent.
Interested individuals can apply to be part of the judging committees or panels through the Sound NSW website. Expressions of interest close on July 21st, with further information on eligibility criteria to be provided in the future.
The NSW Music Prize sets a significant precedent in supporting and recognizing the diverse talents within the Australian music industry. By offering substantial cash prizes and expert mentorship, the initiative aims to propel artists to greater heights of success and visibility both locally and internationally.
