The Victorian Government has pledged its support to the music industry, promising a significant financial boost to musicians, venues, and festivals. Minister for Creative Industries, Colin Brooks, announced a $3 million injection aimed at strengthening the industry and preserving the vibrant cultural landscape that defines Victoria as the live music capital of Australia.
The funding initiatives, including the 10,000 Gigs: The Victorian Gig Fund and the Live Music Festivals Fund, are intended to provide opportunities for local artists and enhance the state’s music scene. The Gig Fund will sponsor 136 venues to host paid gigs by homegrown talents, ranging from iconic establishments like the Wesley Anne and The Tote to unconventional spaces such as the Echuca Aquatic Reserve and Coal Creek Community Park & Museum.
Furthermore, the Live Music Festivals Fund will support 11 festivals with grants of up to $50,000, aiding in the organization of both new and established events like Gaytimes, Town Folk Festival, and Queenscliff Music Festival. These initiatives aim to not only empower emerging and established artists but also stimulate economic growth and job creation within the industry.
Music Works, a program offering grants exceeding $940,000, will further contribute to artist development and audience expansion. Notable beneficiaries include Warrnambool’s Find Your Voice Collective and musician Eliza Hull, highlighting the breadth of talent being nurtured in Victoria.
Beyond financial support, initiatives like the Multicultural Arts Victoria’s NEWPRINT program are paving the way for artists from diverse backgrounds to break into the music industry, fostering inclusivity and innovation within the sector.
Recognizing the pivotal role of live music in Victoria’s cultural landscape, industry stakeholders have lauded the government’s commitment to nurturing the state’s music scene. Fiona Duncan, CEO of Music Victoria, commended the investments, emphasizing their role in sustaining a dynamic festival ecosystem that benefits artists, workers, and communities statewide.
The recent funding announcements form part of a larger $35.4 million package unveiled in the Victorian Budget 2023/24, underscoring the government’s dedication to supporting the music industry across all levels and regions of the state.
