The Australian recorded music industry celebrated its sixth consecutive year of growth in 2024, with wholesale sales surging by 6.1% to reach $717 million. This positive trend was driven by a combination of physical and digital sales, with digital sales outpacing physical sales by a significant margin. The latest data from the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) revealed that digital sales accounted for 91.5% of the total market, amounting to $656 million.
Subscription services continued to dominate the market, capturing a 71.0% share and totaling $509 million, marking an 8.9% increase from the previous year. However, ad-supported streaming models experienced a notable slowdown in revenue growth, expanding by just 1.9% in 2024 compared to a 15.3% surge in 2023.
Despite the digital dominance, vinyl albums emerged as a standout performer in the physical sales category, recording a revenue growth of 5.6% in 2024. Vinyl accounted for a significant portion of total physical sales, representing 72.8% by dollar value and 45.7% by volume.
ARIA’s Chief Executive Officer, Annabelle Herd, emphasized the resilience and vibrancy of the Australian music market, attributing the industry’s growth to the enduring connection Australians have with music. Herd highlighted the demand for physical formats like vinyl as a testament to fans’ desire to engage with music in diverse ways.
Herd acknowledged the intensifying competition in the music industry, both locally and internationally, emphasizing the need for Australian artists to elevate their craft and stand out in a crowded market. She underscored ARIA’s commitment to fostering initiatives that promote audience growth, enhance export opportunities, and cultivate a dynamic and innovative local music scene.
Looking ahead, Herd emphasized the importance of experimentation and boldness in navigating the evolving music landscape. ARIA’s strategic focus revolves around nurturing local talent, amplifying success stories, and fostering a deeper connection between artists and music enthusiasts.
