Visual effects (VFX) supervisor Keith Herft has traversed continents for over two decades, working on acclaimed projects like Better Man and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. In the realm of Australian VFX, the past years have been marked by sporadic opportunities, prompting artists like Herft to seek work abroad.
However, a new chapter unfolds as Weta FX, the renowned New Zealand VFX company co-founded by Peter Jackson, establishes a permanent base in Melbourne. This move, supported by state government and VicScreen, signals a significant boost for the Australian VFX industry, creating around 80 specialized job openings.
Keith Herft, along with other talented artists, views this development as a homecoming. The establishment of a sustainable VFX hub in Melbourne, connected to global industry hubs, promises continuity and growth for local talents.
Zada Herbert, a lead layout technical director at Weta FX, highlights the transformative impact this hub will have on emerging talent. By eliminating barriers like visas and enabling young artists to work close to home, the studio opens doors for aspiring VFX professionals.
Studio manager Sharna Hackett emphasizes the collaborative essence of VFX, noting that the presence of multiple VFX companies in Melbourne, including Framestore and Luma Pictures, will mutually reinforce the industry’s creative landscape.
Colin Brooks, Creative Industries Minister, underscores the economic ripple effects of the government’s screen strategy, estimating a significant boost in direct expenditure. The convergence of artistic culture and industry growth in Victoria, facilitated by Weta’s expansion, heralds a promising era for Melbourne’s creative sector.
As Weta FX cements its roots in Melbourne, the industry anticipates a surge in opportunities for local talents, fostering a vibrant ecosystem that nurtures creativity and innovation. The collaborative spirit of VFX, coupled with the strategic support from various stakeholders, sets the stage for a renaissance in Australia’s visual effects landscape.
